Mid Century Modern is a school of design known for its big, bold, aesthetic statements. The Modernist movement is a favourite of ours, as studio jewelers challenged the definition of "normal" and created surreal beauty. This ring is a fantastic and highly collectable example of the style.
Named "At the Gate of Eternity," this sterling silver ring is a part of Björn Weckström's 1969 "Space Silver" collection. This collection was inspired when the first man walked on the moon. A heavy silver disc is sculpted to suggest a cold, barren moonscape. A small figure is dwarfed by this icy terrain. The disc sits above a heavy flat band that bears Lapponia's makers mark, a sterling silver stamp and hallmarks for Helsinki, Finland and the year 1969. An exquisite jewel and a wearable work of art.
Björn Ragnar Weckström is an internationally renown Finnish sculptor and jewelry designer. In the early 1960s he cofounded Lapponia, a jewelry brand inspired by the gold nuggets of Finnish Lapland, which made him famous worldwide. His silver pieces are inspired by the Finnish winter landscape. Lapponia's most renown jewels were worn by Princess Leia in George Lucas's 1977 film Star Wars.
