Chinese Carved Amethyst Plum Necklace

A Chinese amethyst pendant hand carved in the shape of a plum. The three-dimensional carving displays the varigation of color in the amethyst. The plum pendant hangs from a sterling silver chain. Circa 1920.

Chinese design was very fashionable in the 1920s. Women adorned themselves in jewelry from China and carved gemstones in traditional designs were very popular. The plum is a rich and auspicious symbol in Chinese culture: it symbolizes winter, the first month of the Chinese New Year and is one of the "suits" in Mahjong.
