Fierce 14k Gold Hippocampus Pendant

This fierce hippocampus pendant is cast in 14k yellow gold. This creature is a bit mythologically incorrect, his head appears to be that of a lion or perhaps a wolf, rather than a horse. Nevertheless, it is rendered with fine detail and has an attractive weight. The antique pendant dates to the late Victorian era and the chain is modern, made of recycled 14k gold. A great piece to wear layered or on its own. Circa 1900.

Hippocampoi are the fish-tailed horses of the sea. The ancient Greeks depicted them as composite creatures with the head and fore-parts of a horse and the serpentine-tail of a fish; they were often represented with wings. They were believed to be the adult-form of sea-horses, and Poseidon's chariot was drawn over the surface of the sea by a team of these creatures.
