A very unusual double-sided intaglio fob set in 10k gold. An agate disc is carved on one side with three soldiers in profile. The other side displays a handsome young bearded man, pictured with the Rod of Asclepius. A doctor! The intaglio sits in a sleek gold bezel within an elegant gold frame embellished with scrollwork and beading. This stylish fob finishes with a large gold jump ring and can be worn on a ribbon, watch chain, or one of our Ancient Influences married chains. Circa 1890.
The Rod of Asclepius, the snake and staff symbol, takes its name from the Greek god Asclepius, a deity associated with healing and the medicinal arts. In honour of Asclepius, the ancient Greeks used a particular type of non-venomous rat snake in healing rituals. These snakes crawled around freely on the floor of healing temple dormitories where the sick and injured slept.
Details.....The fob measures 1" by 1.19". In Very Good Antique Condition. Imperfections are to be expected in antique jewelry; it is considered part of the charm.
