This sterling silver book chain and locket necklace is a wonderful example of Victorian fashion. The book chain's links are engraved with flowers and flourishes, and are embellished with silver beads. An ornate oval locket hangs from a handsome bolt ring closure. The locket is engraved with shamrocks, front and back. The locket is in good condition, without frames or glass. The decorative bolt ring allows the locket to be easily swapped out for any other pendant, locket or fob you like. Gorgeous, this book chain is especially beautiful and well made. Circa 1860.
Large silver lockets were very fashionable day wear for ladies in the Mid Victorian era. The term "book chain" comes from the folded flat links' resemblance to the cover of a book. It is also said these flat chains were often used to mark a place in a book.
Details.....The chain is 16.5" long and 0.50" wide. The locket measures 1.25" across and 2.15" long with bale. The bolt ring is 13.5mm across. In Very Good antique condition. In vintage and antique pieces small imperfections are to be expected and considered part of their charm.
