The Alaska gold rushes inspired a unique jewelry style. Nugget and gold quartz jewels were abundant, as in the California gold rush. While the Alaskan rush also unearthed exotic materials like petrified mastodon and walrus tusks and brought them into usage in fine jewelry. This late Victorian brooch is a perfect example of an Alaskan gold rush jewel, with a navette of petrified mastodon tusk framed in 24k gold nuggets. The back of the brooch and its pin are 14k yellow gold. Circa 1900.
