This lovely little brooch is a lace pin, also known as a fichu. These tiny, lightweight brooches had the specific task of pinning closed a lace fichu (a type of neck scarf). fichus were fashionable from the early 18th Century well into the 19th Century.

This pin features a delicately painted miniature portrait of a young blonde woman wearing a head scarf and a ruffled dress. She has lovely eyes. The miniature is set in a decorative gold filled frame. The frame has an integrated bale so the pin may also be worn as a pendant. Circa 1850.
