This exquisite gold brooch in the form of a flintlock pistol is so interesting. It began its life in the 1840s as a watch fob that conceals a retractable pencil. What a fabulous way to take notes! In the 1920s changing fashions inspired someone to convert the fob to a brooch. One hundred years later it comes to us, as beautiful and clever as ever.
The pistol is fashioned in rich 14k gold, with engine turned engraving on the barrel. The handle is decorated with a floral design using the repoussé jewelry making technique that gives this piece its incredible three-dimensional quality. The retractable pencil holder is still functional, although it does not contain lead. The pin is secured with a safety clasp.
