Three heavy hitters in American silver manufacturing brought their talents to bear on this fantastic sterling silver and moonstone brooch. A cross-shaped brooch with elongated arms is embellished with Gothic Revival design motifs. Sculpted, curling three-dimensional leaves adorn the arms of the cross, and a dreamy moonstone is bezel set and framed in rope detail at its center. The back of this dramatic and generously sized piece is signed "Black Starr & Gorham Sterling by Cini." Circa 1950.
The Cini jewelry company produced beautiful jewels, predominately sterling silver pieces that feature classical, gothic and renaissance motifs. Between 1922 and 1970 Cini made some of the highest quality American jewelry of the 20th Century.
Black, Starr & Frost, founded in 1810, is the oldest continuously operating jewelry company in the United States. The firm merged with Gorham Manufacturing Company in 1929. Founded 1831, The Gorham is one of the largest American manufacturers of sterling silver.
