This idyllic Art Nouveau brooch depicts a lovely woman in profile, with long flowing hair and lots and lots of daisies. She wears a wreathe of daisies in her hair, her bare shoulder peaks from a spray of daisies and she holds a daisy in her delicate hand as she plucks its petals...loves me...loves me not. Her sweet face is slightly melancholy as she awaits her answer. A garland of whiplash lines frames the scene. Women and daisies are very popular motifs during the era, and this is a dreamy example of the theme. The repoussé jewelry making technique gives this piece its lovely three-dimensional quality. The back of the brooch is signed for Unger Bros. Circa 1900.
Unger Brothers was a jewelry company in established in 1872 in Newark, New Jersey. The company was established by five sons from a German immigrant family, best known for their sterling silver Art Nouveau designs.
