A good strand of pearls is a timeless staple. This lustrous cultured pearl necklace is a classic choker length, the ideal "first good pearls" for a young woman. The pretty white pearls are freshly hand knotted on white silk and finished with a 14k yellow gold filigree bead clasp. Circa 1960.

Pearls were first cultured in 1893 by Mikimoto. Cultured pearls are created by adding an irritant, such as a grain of sand or small bead, to a pearl oyster to encourage it to cover the irritant in nacre, thus creating a pearl.
