This Victorian smoky quartz bar pin is so subtle and moody. A faceted bar of translucent smoky quartz is banded in engraved 14k gold straps. The quartz has a fine gradient of color saturation. The engraving is delicately geometric, an example of Grand Period Victorian design. A faceted ball of darker smoky quartz dangles from the bar. A beautifully constructed piece with the C-clasp common to the era. Somber, with elegantly muted tones, this brooch would have been appropriate for half-mourning wear. Circa 1870.

Queen Victoria was in mourning for her husband for decades; as a result mourning attire became fashionable in society. Mourning required a strict limitation of social behaviors and attire. The wearing of black was demanded, with very specific rules regarding the wearing of jewelry. Half-mourning was a relaxed form, worn after a period of full mourning and indicating the wearer's transition back to normal life. The colors appropriate for half-mourning were grey, mauve and white.

Details.....The brooch measures 2.51" long and 0.36" wide. The faceted ball is 0.41" wide. In Very Good Antique condition, the quartz bar has a tiny fleabite chip. You should expect all vintage and antique jewels to show some wear, we consider it part of their charm.
