Before watches were wound by twisting the stem, a key (like this one) was fitted to a gear at the back of the watch to wind the piece. Since it was necessary to carry the key with the watch, these keys often took fanciful forms and were used as decorative fobs on the watch chains alongside the watches. Now, we wear the lovely old watch keys as pendants.

This Georgian watch key is 12k gold and gold-sheeted steel. Gold is too soft for use in a winding tool; the winders were made of steel and then covered in a sheet of gold. The decorative portion of the key features a machine-engraved disc set within a floral engraved surround. Such a lovely thing will look great worn on one of our Ancient Influences married chains. Circa 1820.

Details.....The watch key measures 1.03" long and 0.38" by 0.11" wide. In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique jewels; we consider it a part of their charm.
