This bracelet in the shape of Japanese Lanterns is a lovely example of 19th-century Shakudo.
Shakudo, a mix of gold and copper creates the blue-black color of the background of the Lanterns, applied to this is a thin layer of high carat gold to highlight the details, the lantern shaped links are attached to each other using silver elements. The links alternate designs, some have Cranes and flowers while others have scenes of Villages. Adding to the charm of the bracelet is an old repair on the back of one of the links, done so perfectly and so long ago it has become a part of it.
Shakudo was originally used as embellishment and decoration on Katana fittings. It became popular in jewelry in the mid-1800's with the Europeans desire for all things Japanese

It contains a variety of high quality specimens of Scottish Agates which are set in fancy yellow gold cut back collet frames. The clasp is simply and beautifully made as well. Our modern machine shows us the gold content varies from 9 to 14k, not uncommon for an early hand crafted piece. This bracelet dates circa 1820.

It's such a rare treat to find a piece like this and in such nice condition.
This Bracelet has hand engraved vine and flower designs on rich yellow 15k gold. The front of the center plaque opens to reveal a locket with a Daguerreotype of a pretty young dark haired woman with a fichu scarf around her neck. Daguerreotypes were first introduced in 1839 and died out by 1860, these dates, as well as the style of the bracelet, put the date of this piece in the 1850s. The bracelet will comfortably fit a 5 3/4" to 6 1/2" wrist. The bracelet is in very nice condition without much wear to the gold or the black velvet. There are no gold fineness or hallmarks, this type of sentimental jewelry was usually made by the local Jeweler, and unmarked. It tests to be at least 15k gold and is beautifully handmade, even the safety chain appears to be original.
