Blue banded agate with bright orange accents stars in this trompe-l'œil Scottish pebble bow brooch. The striated agate is cut, polished and set to create the clever optical effect of a ruffled ribbon tied in a blowsy bow. The agates are set in a sterling silver frame, with a closed back and Victorian hinged pin and c-clasp. Did the agate in this all original brooch hail from the legendary lost Blue Hole agate source? Perhaps....Blue Hole was known for producing breathtaking blue banded agates edged in vivid orange. Circa 1860-70.
Agate is a type of chalcedony that occurs in bands of different colors and translucencies. Scotland produces many of the world's most beautiful agates, so naturally the Scots developed a unique style of "pebble" jewelry featuring cut and polished agates set in silver or occasionally gold. Queen Victoria loved all things Scottish; after she bought Balmoral Castle in 1848, fashionable English ladies sought to emulate her style by making Scottish pebble jewels popular throughout her reign.
Details.....The brooch measures 1.93" by 1.49". In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on antique and vintage jewels, we consider it part of their charm.
