Fierce Aztec Deity with Red Inlay Pendant

A fierce Aztec deity bares his teeth on this sterling silver necklace. The pendant is a round disc elaborately engraved with a fantastic face. Inlaid dyed organic material frames the face in a fiery red ring. The pendant hangs on a large bale from a faceted sterling silver cable chain. Marked on the back, "Mex," "TG-271," and "925." Circa 1980.

The "TG-271" mark indicates this piece was made in the Mexican city of Taxco by the two hundred and seventy-first silversmith to register their mark at the Taxco assay office with a name beginning with "G." This alphanumeric hallmarking system was instituted in 1979.
