The 1920s saw a Chinoiserie craze: Chinese art, design, and fashion were wildly popular and exerted a strong influence on the Western world. Fashionable women adorned themselves with jewelry inspired by a Chinese aesthetic. A carving of coppery goldstone depicts leaves and plums. The carving hangs from a strand of graduated goldstone beads. The goldstone is strung on decorative copper-colored silk with accents of white glass beads. A 14k yellow gold clasp completes the piece. Circa 1920.
The "gem" commonly referred to as goldstone is actually a type of specialized glass. It is created by mixing copper and other metal oxides with molten glass and allowing tiny crystals of metallic copper to form.
Details.....This necklace has a wearable length of 25". The pendant measures 1.24" by 2.05", and the beads graduate from 8.2mm by 12.4mm in diameter. In Very Good Vintage Condition, you should always expect some wear on vintage and antique jewels; we consider it part of the charm.
