A French jet cross of haunting beauty, rich with a romantic Dark Sparkle. Softly faceted black glass gems are set in a cross-shaped grid of japanned metal. The cross hangs on an articulated bale set with a larger rose-cut black glass gem. The black-on-black glass and metal pairing is deeply Gothic; wear it on a black velvet ribbon for the proper historical uncanniness. Circa 1890.
Queen Victoria was in mourning for her husband for decades; as a result, mourning attire became fashionable in society. Jet and onyx were the most prestigious materials used in mourning jewelry. Black glass, often called French jet, was commonly used as a more affordable and available material.
Details.....The cross measures 1.28” by 1.80”, 2.35” with bale. In Very Good Antique condition. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique jewels; we consider it a part of their charm.
