This pendant has that intense, rough-hewn Brutalist feel with a tactile, organic texture. The pendant is metal, plated with silver and rhodium. It has a shape reminiscent of a pear or a guitar, with a cabochon of lapis nestled at its base. An openwork pattern of blocks runs down the center. Heavily engraved flanks fold around the gemstone. An elongated bale with added jump ring finishes the piece. Circa 1970.

The Modernist movement of the mid 20th century embodies big, bold aesthetic ideals. Studio jewelers pushed the boundaries of "normal," creating fantastic and surreal beauty. Brutalism design distinguishes itself from Modernism with its deliberate plainness and crudity.
