This delightful Victorian portrait box employs a Neoclassical motif. A miniature painting is set into the top of a rectangular gilded bronze box. The portrait represents a late 18th-century woman wearing a powdered wig and a large feathered hat. Her elaborate gown displays an expanse of lovely décolletage. The painting appears to be signed by the artist and preserved under a clear pane. The top of the box is covered in engraved flowers and applied laurels. And the sides are engraved with leaves, flowers, and vines. Cream and yellow-striped silk lines the interior; the silk is lightly stained. The hinge and clasp are in good working order. A flat bottom, stable weight, and lined interior make this an ideal jewel casket. Circa 1890.

The patch box originated in the 18th Century during the reign of Louis XV. Used to store patches and bits of gummed black taffeta worn by fashionable people to emphasize the beauty of their skin or to cover blemishes, the term patch box has come to refer to many types of small, decorative boxes.

Details.....The box measures 4" by 3.05" and 1.41" tall. In Good Antique Condition, the silk lining is slightly stained. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique jewels; we consider it part of their charm.
