Elaborate Victorian black onyx and pearl brooch set in 14k gold. An onyx oval sits horizontally within an open work frame composed of small onyx diamonds and teardrops. Three little pearls are set across the onyx, surrounded in gold detailing. Each piece of onyx is held in an engraved gold bezel, with gold beads set at each interstice. Three elongated onyx pendants dangle from the bottom of the brooch. The brooch is finished with a classic c-clasp and a chatelaine hook. This all original piece was likely worn for mourning, black onyx symbolizing grief and pearls representing tears. Circa 1880.
