Roman Lion & Dolphin Intaglio in Antique Gold Ring

This fascinating Roman intaglio appears to depict a lion and a dolphin, carved in carnelian and set in a Georgian 14k gold ring. In the sixth/seventh century B.C. ‘Homeric Hymns,’ Dionysus, the Greek God of wine and theatre, is kidnapped by pirates. The God transformed himself into a lion to frighten his captors, and when the terrified pirates jumped ship Dionysus turned them into dolphins. Perhaps this intaglio is referencing this amusing tale. The carving is set in a sleek bezel over a slender round band. Circa 1800.

Details... Currently a size 6.75. This ring may be sized up or down two sizes free of charge. The top of the ring measures 12mm by 14.3mm, the band is 1.1mm wide. In Very Good Antique Condition. You should expect some wear on vintage and antique jewels; we consider it a part of their charm.
