Fantastical Winged Figure Sterling & Turquoise Necklace

A fantastical winged figure is modeled in sterling silver and set with sky-blue turquoise gems. Is this a bird? A person wearing a bird costume? Is it the legendary Thunderbird from Native American history and culture? I'm not sure, but this pendant is definitely powerful. Graphic and bold, he's got it all: fierce turquoise eyes, gorgeous extended wings, long tail feathers, and a little beak. Engraving, silver overlay, and wirework add wonderful detail. This dramatic creature is suspended from a vintage sterling curb chain. The back is marked "Taxco Mexico 925" and either "LGL" or "LCL." Stamped on one wing is the Mexican Eagle mark for sterling silver. Circa 1960.

The city of Taxco is an important center for Mexican silver jewelry design. During the 1940s, Taxco drew jewelry artists from all over the world. The main attraction for the designers and studio jewelers was the abundant supply of locally mined materials, such as silver and semi-precious gems.
