1950s Engagement Rings

Diamonds surged in popularity for engagement rings during the 1950s thanks to the famously coined phrase, "A Diamond is Forever" entering the lexicon at the end of the last decade.

Styles

Larger stones, particularly diamonds, surged in popularity. With the emphasis on the expensive center stone, the setting was often more simple. Solitaire settings, often adorned with with symmetrical side diamond baguettes, were in vogue. The center stone cut was most often emerald and marquise cut. Unique for its time, engravings were added to the setting for a touch of personalization and uniqueness.

Materials

Platinum was no longer scare now that WWII was over, making it a popular choice for engagement rings. With the decade featuring progressively larger center stones, diamond color grade often fell to keep the expense down. To boost the appearance of the diamond color grade, jewelers utilized white metal settings over yellow, which would bring out the white of the diamond.

Gems

Diamonds defined the 1950's era for engagement rings. The diamond was touted as the most durable stone that could weather all storms and hardships, making it a perfect symbol for commitment to a lifelong relationship. This perception still rings true today.

"I loved every bit of my experience searching for an engagement ring with my fiance there. Their website is filled with vintage and estate beauties. I was pleasantly surprised to find they had a good amount more in store. The sales person let me look without pressure, try on every ring that caught my eye, and let me even take pictures to think it over. We found a 1910 Edwardian diamond ring and got it for a great price."

MOURNING IN THE VICTORIAN PERIOD
INSTALLMENT 1 OF THE IDENTIFLY SERIES

-Paula Bixel - Proprietor

"Wearing jewelry in remembrance of our beloved dead is a tradition that originated in the 16th century, but the fashion for mourning jewelry reached its height during the reign of Queen Victoria. Victorian mourning jewelry, particularly those pieces dating to the earlier part of this era, are of special interest to lovers of antique jewelry due to its uniquely personal nature; few other styles of jewelry allow such an intimate glimpse into the past."
