Beautifully Made Vintage Silver Animal Fetish Necklace

This beautiful Navajo fetish necklace is imbued with a wonderful vitality. Wee birds, bears, frogs, and turtles are cast in glowing sterling silver and strung, along with sterling tube beads, on durable steel wire. The hook and eye clasp is handmade. A marvelous necklace that invokes the power and beauty of nature. Circa 1980.

Navajo fetishes depict animals such as the wolf, badger, bear, mountain lion, eagle, mole, frog, deer, ram, and others. In the Navajo cosmology, and those of neighboring tribes, each animal is believed to have inherent powers or qualities that may aid the owner. True fetishes are sacred and do not leave the village. However, Navajo and Zuni artists create "fetishes" that are for sale.
