Stunning Matl-style sterling silver and gemstone drop earrings. These Mexican earrings are set with square faceted amethysts and embellished with coral dangles. The earring tops are scalloped with overlay and studded with silver balls. A silver orb hangs from each top, and three points of articulation give the earrings a playful movement. French wires make these lovely artisan earrings easy to wear. The back of one earring is marked "Hecho en Mexico." Circa 1960.
These Matl-style earrings were made in Mexico but are not stamped with an assay mark that could assist with further identification. "Matl" is the Aztec word for water and here refers to a folk art style popularized in the 1930s by artist Matilde Eugenia Poulat.
Details: The earrings are 1.9" long and .76" wide. The ball measures .62" in diameter. In Very Good Vintage Condition. You should expect some wear on all vintage and antique jewels; we consider it part of its charm.
