This exquisite antique necklace holds a beautiful natural agate in an 18k gold cut back collet frame. The translucent agate in this piece resembles tortoiseshell, with rich desert tones. Cut back collets were popular in the 18th and early 19th century, a forerunner to the modern prong setting. They were created by cutting away gold from a thick bezel thus forming "tines" that come up over the stone. The process of removing metal rather than adding it allows you to see the tool marks and the simple beauty of hand crafting. The pendant dates from the 1820 and the chain is new.

Details.....The agate pendant measures 1.35" by 0.99" and the chain is 19" long. In Excellent antique condition. You should expect some wear on all vintage and antique jewels, it is a part of their charm.
