Before watches were wound by twisting the stem, a key (like this one) was fitted to a gear at the back of the watch to wind the piece. Since it was necessary to carry the key with the watch, these keys often took fanciful forms and were used as decorative fobs on the watch chains alongside the watches. Now we wear the lovely old watch keys as pendants.

This beautiful antique watch key is a lovely example of the type. The gold sheeted body of the key is in the form of a four-petaled flower like a pansy, beautifully engraved. A glowing citrine is set at the center of the flower. The key is two sided, open at the center so the citrine is visible on both sides. The rectangular citrine is faceted on one side and flat on the other. An interesting piece of history, it would look great worn on your favorite chain. Circa 1830.

Details.....This watch key measures 2.09" long and 0.77" wide. In Good Antique Condition, there is wear to the metal at the tip of the key. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique jewels, we consider it a part of their charm.

Item number n8047.
