Antonio Pineda's Blue Moonstone & Silver Statement Ring
Antonio Pineda's work feels extremely modern; it's difficult to believe he was producing 80-something years ago in the mid-20th century. This gorgeous moonstone and 970-grade silver statement ring exemplifies his skill and vision. The mystical blue cabochon moonstone sits in a sleek bezel floating between two glossy, high-grade silver bands. The bands taper into split shoulders and the flat-edged half-round band. The dreamy moonstone captures the light, drawing the eye deeper and deeper into the stone's opalescent center. The underside of the ring is marked "Hecho en Mexico Silver 970," it bears the maker's mark Pineda began using in 1953 and Mexico's Eagle 1 mark. Circa 1950.
This piece dates from a high point in silver jewelry design in Mexico. In the 1940s, the Mexican city of Taxco drew jewelry artists from all over the world. The main attraction for designers and studio jewelers was the locally mined materials. Silver and semi-precious gems were abundant and affordable.
Antonio Pineda was born in Taxco in 1919. He apprenticed with William Spratling before opening his workshop in 1939. Pineda's Modernist style was bold and architectural. His jewelry is amongst the most technically refined ever made in Taxco.
