These darkly romantic Victorian earbobs are a delight. Spheres of faceted black onyx hang from elegant gold filled leaves, suspended from 14k gold french ear wires. Graceful movement and an unexpectedly light weight make these earrings a pleasure to wear. Circa 1870.

Queen Victoria was in mourning for her husband Prince Albert for decades. The Queen was the primary arbiter of fashion, therefore mourning attire became not only fashionable but required at Court and in society in general. Onyx and jet, a naturally black petrified lignite coal, were the most prestigious materials used in mourning jewelry.  

Details.....The earrings measure 1.65" long and the onyx drops are 16mm wide. In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique jewels, we consider it part of the charm.
