Enameled & Engraved Victorian Pearl-Set Gold Locket
A fine Victorian locket with a beautiful floral motif. The body of this oval locket is made of 15ct gold; the front is enameled in black and engraved with flowers, leaves, tendrils and berries. Three flowers, morning glory perhaps, are set with tiny natural pearls. The decorative front of the locket is framed by a graceful scalloped pattern and the back is engraved with a geometric pattern that resembles scales or petals. The locket hangs from a decorative engraved bale. The interior is clean with intact frame and glass on one side and the piece snaps shut securely. Circa 1870.
If the flowers are indeed morning glory, paired with the black enamel and pearls it indicates the locket is quite likely a mourning piece. Morning glory flowers symbolize the mortality of life and pearls represented tears.
