An exquisite sterling silver vinaigrette crafted in London in the earliest years of the 19th Century. Vinaigrettes were used to mask the horrible smells common to this malodorous era. This vinaigrette takes the form of a small silver box engraved with flowers, a delicate crosshatch pattern, and a Greek key border. The lid opens to reveal a grate, pierced and engraved with a flower vase motif. The grate is hinged, opening to disclose a compartment meant to hold a small sponge doused with cologne or other pleasant-smelling unguent. When a person with delicate sensibilities confronts a noisome smell, the box is opened and held to the nose. This charming piece is thoroughly hallmarked inside the lid, grate, and interior compartment with England's sterling lion, London's crowned leopard, the K date mark for 1805-06, and a duty mark. It also bears the maker's mark for London silversmith John Death.

Details.....The vinaigrette measures 1.13" by .88" by .44". In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique pieces; we consider it part of the charm.
