Black Cherry. Deep red bakelite beads, such a dark red they almost read as black. The round beads are softly faceted with a subtle glossy glow. These graduated bakelite beads are hand knotted on dark red silk and finished with a hidden drilled and threaded bakelite clasp. The red silk highlights the red tone of the beads. Circa 1930.

Bakelite was the first plastic made from synthetic components. It was developed by chemist Leo Baekeland in Yonkers, New York, in 1909. Bakelite jewelry became fashionable in the 1920s due to its sleek, modern look and its substantial, high-end feel. The wide variety of colors and visual textures made available by Bakelite kept it popular through the 1950s.

Details.....Necklace is 27.5" long. The beads graduate from 6.8mm to 15.3mm. In Very Good Vintage condition. You should always expect some wear on your antique and vintage jewels, we consider it part of their charm.
