Fancy Pinchbeck Torpedo Earrings Early 19th Century
This popular earring shape from the very early 19th Century is referred to as a torpedo. Usually found dangling from a delicate top, these long pendulum-shaped earrings were all the rage and can be found in gold, gemstones, and pinchbeck, the popular and affordable gold substitute of the era. Pinchbeck is a metal comprised of alloys with no gold content, yet it remains an intriguing high carat gold color over the centuries. This pair is unusually fabulous for the mesh-like open work that gives them a lighter than air look while retaining their substantial size. Applied stars and curvaceous mesh petals add additional visual appeal. The ear wires are 14k gold replacements. Circa 1820.
