The inside of the ring is engraved with "Thomas James" "died 22 Dec.r 1822" "aged 8 yrs" It is still in its original box from Manchester England.
The Victorians held great meaning in symbolism and that is reflected in the use of colors and gems in mourning pieces. The faceted onyx on this ring represents deep mourning and the loss of someone quite dear. The hair under the crystal is plaited and light brown with golden highlights in color.
