Squoval Old Mine Cut Diamond in Delightful Belcher Ring
A fabulously eccentric antique diamond dazzles in this Victorian solitaire ring. The 14k gold setting marries clean-lined architecture with fluid floral curves. An approximate .40ct old mine cut diamond with a very chunky, squoval shape sits in a ruffled belcher head. The term "belcher" refers to a particular style of setting: the prongs that hold the stone are an integrated part of the ring, creating a fluted, petal-like effect around the gem. Scrolling latticework adorns the pierced shoulders. The interior of the slim band bears the maker's mark for Woods & Sons. A delightful antique diamond engagement ring with unexpected details. Circa 1890.
J. R. Wood & Sons was founded in 1850, in Trenton, New Jersey. The J. R. Wood & Sons' 1919 catalogue describes the company as "diamond cutters, wedding ring makers and manufacturers of fine gold and platinum jewelry".
