Scottish pebble jewelry is one of our favorite categories of Victorian jewels. This wonderful example of the type has, to our eyes, a vaguely nautical air. The body of the brooch is a ring of moss agate with a beveled edge. A carved piece of moss agate that recalls a propellor in shape is fastened to the ring with brass rivets. The brooch is finished with the hinged pin and c-clasp commonly seen in this era. This moss agate is wonderful, by parts translucent and milky opaque, with vivid green mossy mineral filaments. The natural beauty of the agate is refined by the balanced design of this fine pebble brooch. Circa 1870.

This brooch evokes for me the image of Queen Victoria and her love of Scottish jewelry. Once the ladies of England see their lovely young Queen wearing her Scottish jewels, Scottish pebble jewelry becomes all the rage.

Details.....The brooch measures 1.15" in diameter. In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on antique and vintage jewels, we consider it part of their charm.
