During the Art Deco era, Chinese design was all the rage in the West. Jewelry featuring traditional Chinese motifs was very popular. This unusual dragon brooch is a fascinating example of the style. Opaque coral-colored Bakelite is carved into an openwork dragon design. The scaly beast appears to be breathing fire at a building, displayed in a glossy oval frame of translucent apple juice Bakelite. Such an interesting piece. Circa 1930.

Bakelite was the first plastic made from synthetic components. Developed by chemist Leo Baekeland in Yonkers, New York, 1909. Bakelite jewelry became fashionable in the 1920s due to its sleek, modern look and substantial, high-end feel. The wide variety of colors and visual textures made available by Bakelite kept it popular through the 1950s.

Details: The brooch measures 1.51" tall and 3.44" wide. In Very Good Vintage Condition. You should always expect some wear on your antique and vintage jewels; we consider it part of their charm.
