A handsome horse's head brooch modeled in colorful Bakelite. The horse's mane is tousled, and his eyes are wild. His decorative bridle and breastplate have gold floral accents, and his reigns are gold-tone chains. This is a vivacious and dynamic beast, beautifully rendered. Circa 1940.
Bakelite was the first plastic made from synthetic components. Developed by chemist Leo Baekeland in Yonkers, New York, 1909. Bakelite jewelry became fashionable in the 1920s due to its sleek, modern look and substantial, high-end feel. The wide variety of colors and visual textures made available by Bakelite kept it popular through the 1950s.
Details: The brooch measures 3" tall and 2.58" wide. In Very Good Vintage Condition. You should always expect some wear on your antique and vintage jewels; we consider it part of their charm.
