This Scottish pebble brooch is shaped as a sassy little parti-colored bow. Vibrant agate and jasper is cut, polished and set in a sterling silver frame to create a three-dimensional ribbon-like effect. The brooch has a closed back and is finished with a Victorian hinged pin and c-clasp. Circa 1860-70.
Agate is a type of chalcedony that occurs in bands of different colors and translucencies. Scotland produces many of the world's most beautiful agates, so naturally the Scots developed a unique style of "pebble" jewelry featuring cut and polished agates set in silver or occasionally gold. Queen Victoria loved all things Scottish; after she bought Balmoral Castle in 1848, fashionable English ladies sought to emulate her style by making Scottish pebble jewels popular throughout her reign.
Details.....The brooch measures 0.99" by 0.92". In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on antique and vintage jewels, we consider it part of their charm.
