The Victorians and Edwardians loved well-crafted accessories that were both pretty and practical. This English sterling silver vesta case is a splendid example. The case is rectangular with soft edges; its hinged lid opens easily and closes securely. A delicate ivy leaf motif is engraved over the case's surface. A blank space on its front awaits a personal engraving. This case is in clean, functional condition; while it was intended to hold matches, it certainly may hold a wide variety of things. It hangs on a sturdy sterling silver curb chain. Hallmarked inside the lid and around the case's edge for Birmingham, 1899-1900.
A vesta case (known in the US as a match safe) was invented in the 1830s to keep matches. Named after the Roman goddess of fire, these pocket-sized cases protected highly combustible matches from accidental ignition or damp.
Details.....The chain is 24" long, the vesta case measures 1.52" by 1.20" by .45". In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique pieces; we consider it part of the charm.
