A superb Art Nouveau plique-à-jour locket representing the mythological tale of Leda and the Swan. Zeus, in the form of a swan, spreads his wings over the bust of the Spartan queen Leda. The sterling silver figures are beautifully sculpted in bas relief. Exquisite blue, teal, and pink enamel form a rayed backdrop to this dramatic scene. The decorative top of the sterling locket slides open, revealing a compartment ideal for stowing away a small precious item such as a lock of a lover's hair. This delicate piece hangs on a jump ring bale. Wear this outstanding locket on one of our Ancient Influences married chains. Circa 1900.

Plique-à-jour (French for "letting in daylight") is a technically challenging enameling technique where enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing in the final product. Light shines through the transparent enamel, creating a stained-glass effect.

Details.....The locket measures 1.20" by 1.46". In Very Good Vintage Condition. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique jewels; it is a part of their charm.
