An unusual and quite dramatic squash blossom necklace by Navajo artist Wilford Begay. The overall design is traditional, with a central Naja pendant, stylized squash blossoms, and two-part construction beads strung on silver chain. The Naja and blossoms are modeled as flat silhouettes; tiny needlepoint turquoises cover their oxidized surfaces with delicate lapidary work in hand cut bezels. The piece fastens with a hook and eye clasp. This is a special piece, signed "W BEGAY" by the artist. Circa 1970.

The Naja symbol is believed to have originated in the Middle East. The Moors brought the horse shoe shaped jewelry with them into Spain as a ward against the evil eye. The Spanish conquistadors introduced the symbol to the Navajo, who integrated it into the dramatic squash blossom design.

Details.....The necklace is 22.5" long. The Naja measures 2.65" by 3.5", the blossoms are .75" by 2.22", and the beads are 7mm in diameter. In Very Good Vintage Condition. You should expect some wear on all vintage and antique jewels, we consider it part of their charm.
