Vibrant Zuni Eagle Dancer Pendant/Brooch Signed Lucio

A vibrant pendant/brooch of colorful stone inlay from important Zuni artist John Lucio. An Eagle Dancer is depicted in turquoise, mother of pearl, onyx, and coral, channel inlaid in sterling silver. The silver is enhanced with beading and engraved detail. This figure is so potent and vivacious, Lucio's lapidary work is outstanding. The jewel has both a pin and a bale for versatility of wear, and it hangs from a sterling serpentine chain. The back of the piece is signed "Lucio" in Gothic script. Circa 1960.

The eagle dance is a ritual dance practiced by some American Indians. This dance has different meanings for different tribes, such as a prayer for rain, peace or health or a preparation for battle.

John Lucio (1919-ca.1990s) was a resident of Zuni Pueblo who specialized in intricate inlay jewelry. Starting in the 1950s, he worked as a lapidary artist and silversmith. Eagle Dancers were Lucio's preferred subject, he was one the few artist that used the image of Eagle Dancer in jewelry. His career was as a Zuni firefighter with the U. S. Forest Service, he made jewelry when not firefighting.

Details.....The chain is 24" long and the pendant measures 1.27" by 1.41". In Very Good Vintage Condition. You should expect some wear on all vintage and antique jewels, we consider it part of their charm.
