An exquisite 18th Century gilt watch cock has been suspended from a modern gold-filled cable chain. The cock is engraved with flowers and cut through with filigreed vines. A glittering crystal is set at the cock's heart. Circa 1700-1860.

From the 14th to the 18th Century, watchmakers handcrafted elaborate watch movements. The decorative works, known as "cocks," were commonly made of gilt or jewelers brass. The cock's highly detailed filigree designs often incorporated mythical motifs. By the mid-18th Century, new escapements emerged, enabling watchmakers to craft thinner, lighter watches. The older watches were often broken apart for their materials. The silver, gold, and gems were repurposed; only the movements with their watch cocks remained. With no intrinsic value beyond beauty, watch cocks were repurposed into jewelry, creating a fashion trend in the late Georgian and early Victorian era.

Details....The chain is 20" long, and the pendant measures 0.81" by 1.34". In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on your vintage and antique jewels; we consider it part of their charm.
