X Cash East India Co. 1808 Coin in Gold Necklace

A handsome gold necklace featuring a Madras Presidency East India Company X Cash coin dated 1808. The antique copper coin displays the East India Company coat of arms on its obverse; two lions with St. George's cross on the crest and flags, and a motto reading "Auspicio Regis et Senatus Anglia" (translation "By the Authority of the King and Parliament of England."). The coin's value "Ten cash make two Falus" is written in Persian on the reverse. The coin is displayed in an 18k yellow gold ribbed frame with decorative bale, the bale is stamped 18k. The modern rope chain is 14k recycled yellow gold.

Many of the remaining 1808 Madras Presidency East India Company X Cash coins have been rescued from the bottom of the English Channel. A shipment of coins struck at the Soho mint in Birmingham, England and shipped on the “Admiral Gardner” to the Madras Presidency colony in “British” India. The “Admiral Gardner” was a three masted sailing ship that left London for India on January 24, 1809. It ran into a storm at the mouth of the English Channel and sank. In 1984, the wreck was found and partially salvaged; a sealed barrel full of these coins was recovered. We have no evidence that this coin is one of those recovered, but the story is fascinating.

Details.....The chain is 18" long. The framed coin measures 26mm in diameter, 39mm with bale. In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique pieces; we consider it part of the charm.
