A dramatic Meso-American mask, set in a fierce sterling silver pendant. The mask may be carved from sodalite, the midnight blue stone is opaque and streaked with brick red matrix; it represents an Aztec warrior's face. The carving is held by two silver tabs and a chin strap, clasping it to a feathery headdress frame. The pendant hangs on a large bale from a vintage sterling Singapore chain. The bale is stamped "Mexico ARA TA-86 925." Circa 1970.
The city of Taxco is an important center for Mexican silver jewelry design. During the 1940s, Taxco drew jewelry artists from all over the world. The main attraction for the designers and studio jewelers was the abundant supply of locally mined materials such as silver and semi-precious gems.
Details.....The chain is 18" long, and the pendant measures 1.55" by 233", 2.65" with bale. In Very Good Vintage Condition. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique jewels; we consider it part of their charm.
