Georgian Dessert Toned Agate Necklace in 18k Gold

This exquisite Georgian necklace holds a gorgeous wafer thin slice of natural agate in a cut back collet frame of 18k gold. The translucent agate in this piece resembles tortoiseshell, with rich swirling tones of caramel, cinnamon and chocolate. The pendant dates from the 1820 and the chain is a modern addition of recycled 14k gold.

Cut back collets were popular in the 18th and early 19th century, a forerunner to the modern prong setting. They were created by cutting away gold from a thick bezel thus forming "tines" that come up over the stone. The process of removing metal rather than adding it allows you to see the tool marks and the simple beauty of handcrafting.
