A glorious Victorian brooch of a stern and handsome woman depicted in tortoise shell inlaid with gold. This type of exquisite inlay work is referred to as piqué. Her classically beautiful profile is carved from the glowing shell. Rich gold accents her elaborate headdress. A frame of engraved 14k gold displays the carving, and the brooch is finished with the c-clasp typical of the era. Circa 1860.
