This Victorian brooch is an oval of pitch black jet, exquisitely carved with a variety of flowers. Surely this mourning jewel is communicating a sentimental message using the Victorian Language of Flowers. The brooch is secured with a classic Victorian brass C-clasp. Circa 1880.

Queen Victoria was in mourning for her husband for decades, as a result mourning attire became fashionable in society. Jet's naturally black color of made it a logical material for use in the mourning jewelry worn at that time. Jet is petrified lignite coal; it was primarily mined and worked in Whitby, England.

Details.....The brooch measures 1.93" by 1". In Very Good Antique Condition. The jet is chipped on the back of the piece. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique pieces, we consider it part of the charm.
